The ‘Encounter with the Senses’ events are back, and this autumn they will take us on a journey of observations, discoveries and tastings.
We kick off on Thursday 15 October with the final event of the year in the “Gazing at the Sky. Reading the Universe through Books and Stars” series: the exhibition dedicated to astronomy, which is drawing to a close in the coming days, and which we will close with a special event in collaboration with the Circolo Astrofili Veronesi. During the evening, we will retrace the key milestones and major figures in astronomy, and will then be able to admire the night sky through planetariums and telescopes.
The second event, “The Sign and the Word: Stories and Forms of Writing”, will take place on Wednesday 28 October. Calligrapher Ewan Clayton will guide us through the evolution of Latin scripts and help us understand this development, alternating between narration and imagery through live demonstrations. Library staff will introduce the theme by showcasing a selection of significant manuscripts, which will be displayed up close. The event will be held in English with translation provided.
We will then continue on Thursday 12 November with ‘Stories of Cocoa: A Journey Through Pages, Aromas and Flavours’, which will take us on a journey of discovery through the fascinating history of one of the most beloved foods of all time: chocolate. Amidst the pages of ancient volumes, we’ll explore naturalistic descriptions, recipes and travel routes, before ending on a sweet note with a special tasting led by Exquisita, a company specialising in handmade pralines and other delicious treats.
We’ll conclude on Thursday 26 November with “The Colour Factory. Pigments, recipes and techniques of medieval miniature painting”, which will immerse us in some of the most beautiful pages preserved in the Capitolare, amidst golden hues, vibrant colours, secret techniques and hidden threats. We will also have the opportunity to learn about the behind-the-scenes process of producing natural earth pigments, thanks to the participation of Dolci Colori, a historic Veronese firm that has been carrying on this tradition for generations.
