It was August 1st, 517 AD when the scribe Ursicinus — in a rather unusual gesture for the time — signed and dated the manuscript he had just finished copying. This allows us to confidently establish a minimum date for the origins of the Capitolare Library and to consider it, rightfully, the oldest library in the world still in operation.
1,508 years later, Friday, August 1st will be a special day at the Capitolare:
To celebrate, visitors can enjoy reduced admission to the museum spaces throughout the day, and join two special guided tours at a discounted rate:
English tour at 11:00 AM
Italian tour at 3:00 PM
We look forward to celebrating with you!
